Find the perfect edge profile for your Design

Choosing a right edge profile for your specific design style might look a small task but yet can make a huge impact, from look & feel to cleaning and safety with all other aesthetic adding the important finishing touches to your surface design.

Why do you need to choose an Edge Profile?

Aside from the visual aesthetics, edge profiles are vital to protect and prolong the life and performance of your natural stone surface and finish.

It’s important to take the following factors into consideration
# All exposed edges should be fabricated and finished to the same finish as the surface
# The top and bottom of edges must be rounded. Do not create square edges as the larger the surface area of the edge (ie. radius), the more resistant it is to chipping
# All edges should have a minimum radius on any edge profile of 2mm

Which Edge Profile?

There is a broad range of edge profiles available to inspire your design, each adding a unique style and ambience to your design. The depth of your surface can bring drama and elegance to your design.

FINISHES

WHEN NATURAL STONE COMES INTO THE MIND OF ANY PERSON, IT’S THE IMAGE OF POLISHED STONE WITH ALL GLAZE, GLOSS AND SHINE HAVING VIENS AND VIBRANT COLORS OR SOMETHING CLASSIC AND SOOTHING IN ITS FEATURES. HOWEVER, PRACTICALITY IT SHOULD BE KEPT IN MIND THAT POLISHED STONE SURFACE CANNOT BE APPLIED EVERYWHERE BECAUSE OF ITS CERTAIN LIMITATIONS. SO THEN TO OVERCOME THIS, THERE ARE NUMBER OF ALTERNATIVES AVAILABLE WHICH NOT ONLY ENHANCES THE
BEAUTY OF THE STONE BUT ALSO MAKE YOUR HOME DÉCOR OR COMMERCIAL PROJECT FROM BORING TO SOMETHING EXCITING, STUCTURALY DESIGNED AND COORDINATING WITH THE THEMES WHICH DOES NOT REQUIRE MUCH MAINTENANCE. THERE ARE FINISHES FROM SAWN, HONED AND POLISHED WITH SMOOTH, MATTE AND EVEN SURFACES TO FLAMED, LEATHERED, SHOTBLASTED AND MANY FOR TEXTURED, WEATHERED AND SEMI-SMOOTH/ROUGH SURFACE GIVING ANTI-SLIP PROPERTIES AND ALL-WAETHER LOOK AND APPEAL TO A NATURAL STONE. SOME FINISHES ARE MORE SUITABLE FOR COUNTERTOPS, LAVATORY TOPS OR BARTOPS AND SOME FOR ELEVATION, EXTERIOR PAVING AND WALLS, OR FOR LAYING IN BATHROOM. ALL THESE REASONS MAKE SURFACE FINISHING IMPORTANT WHICH ARE AS BELOW:-

TYPES OF FINISHES –:

NATURAL – Raw stones from the earth surface having a natural ridge running where it gets split manually giving it a uniform and desired size and shape. Then it doesn’t get any form of treatment of abrasives or materials maintaining its natural state unlike any smooth or textured finish. Back side can be gauged for facilitating a desired thickness.

SAWN – Sawn finish on the stone is the result of sawing the raw block of stone either from gang saw or block cutters into slabs or tiles which produces rough and irregular surface with pores and undulations but uniform then natural finish. It is mainly used in pavings and exterior walls because of its anti-slippery finish.

HONED – This finish is used to make a stone flat and smooth from any irregularities or uneven surface which creates stone finish of matted and low-sheen surface reflecting somewhat actual bright color of the stone. Honed finished stone is used heavily for interior and exterior paving, walls and decors. Mainly limestone, slate stone and sandstone is highly popular in this finish which are hard for full polished finish.

POLISHED – Polished finish is resulted from use of diamond pads and bricks on the stone surface which ultimately gives shine and glossy finish enhancing the natural beauty depicting veins, patterns and unique designs gifted from mother earth. This finish is suitable for almost all kind of stones.

SATIN – Satin is a very uncommon finish and new in the industry which falls between Honed and Polished Finish means satin surface finish is a semi-rough in nature, which is halve matte and halve glossy reflecting more light than honed but less than of polished finish. This is mainly done on marble, granite and sandstone.

RIVEN – Riven finish also known as natural cleft is a type of natural finish which contains majority of surface of a tile or slab with irregularities which means uneven surfaced stone typically for garden, pavements and exterior walls for giving any area a personalized space making it one of its kind.

SHOT BLASTED – Shot Blasted is basically a textured finish created by blasting very small iron balls at high speeds either manually or through automatic machines resulting in rough stone surface giving the stone anti-slippery properties and weathered look which perfectly suitable for walkways, wall cladding and landscape designs. This finish
is mainly done on granites, sandstones and limestone.

FLAMED – Also known as thermal finish, flaming is done for rough textured surface finish resulting in non slippery surface by use of high temperature nozzles or blowtorches either manually or through automated machines directly on stone which pops out crystals of the natural stone. This makes this finish highly suitable to use for floors and outdoor use purposes,

LAPPATO – Lappato Finish on a stone is done to give it half matte and half gloss appearance which require less maintenance. Its process involves polishing of stone then brushing and then again final polishing to achieve the desired finish and look. It’s mainly suitable to use in elevations and countertops.

BUSH HAMMERED – Another finish in the list of textured surfaces is Bush Hammered. This finish is achieved by hand tool or hydraulic bush hammering machine, which results in high number of small indents close to each other on the stone surface which feels rough but evenly textured perfect for any weather or climatic conditions.

BRUSHED – Brushed finish as the name indicates is a finish done through the use of certain types of metal or wire brushes rotating against the stone surface in process removing the soft particles of the stone and as a result gives stone some worn look that feels soft and heavenly when touched. Brushed finish is combined with other finishes in most of the scenarios. It is mainly done to marble, granite, slate stone and sandstone.

]SAND BLASTED – Sand Blasted finish is ideal for giving a stone surface an aging and weathered look. Sand Blasted process involves blasting a high pressure mix spray of air, sand and other grit against the surface of the stone for a perfect rough finish however it results in some dullness to the stone color but it looks nice. It can only be done against some specific types of stones only.

LEATHER – Leather finish is obtained through process of brushing of stone surfaces by range of brushes, done to create a surface that is slightly undulating, semi smooth and looks less glossy but feels and give a stone suede look. This finish is suitable for outdoor use and is highly preferable for countertops, lavatory tops and sink tops.

WATERJET – Waterjet finish is somewhat similar to Flamed finish with just difference in the process and resulted color. Waterjet Finish is created by applying highly pressurized water on the stone surface through a nozzle which washes away softer particles of the stone resulting in rough but smooth felt tile. As use of flaming process sometimes result in change of color of the stone, waterjet process does not affect the natural color of the stone that’s why this finish is getting popular day by day.

ANTIQUED – Antique Finish also known as Aging/Aged Finish is done on the stone to give it a rustic, worn and vintage look replicating like it has been used for a long period of time. Antique surfaced stone is quite popular because it looks attractive and this finish can be achieved by lot of ways however mostly through tumbled process.

TUMBLED – Tumbled finish is done for giving an aging appearance to the stone like it has been used or walked for centuries. In a tumbled finish strong small sized natural stones are putted into vibrating – drum shaped like machine which are then filled with sand, water and pebbles to chip for making round edges and produced a distressed looking stone surface. This finish is most preferred for giving any stone an aged appearance and look.

MUSHROOM – Also famously known as Rocky Finish, it is made through masonry tools with controlled blows on the surface of the stone with evenly back side for easy installation; however this finish can also be achievable through machines. Mainly used for elevation and cladding the uneven surface exhibits natural and raw texture, but been limited to some stones.

CHIESELED – Chieseled finishing is done on natural stone to give it a linear pattern surface. This finish is mainly done through use of machines which makes fine grooves positioned closely and parallel to each other to appear linear and linen appropriate for walls.

OTHER FINISHES- CARESS, PINEAPPLE, LICHYEE, FLUTED, LETANO

CONCLUSION -:

THERE IS A FINISH FOR EVERY APPLICAPLE USE OF NATURAL STONE. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING SHOULD BE FINDING THE BEST BALANCE BETWEEN PRACTICALITY AND DESIGNING AN AREA MAGNIFICIENTLY. IT SHOULD BE KEPT IN MIND THERE ARE NO WRONG CHOICES ONLY IT’S THE PERSONAL PREFERENCES.
